A Court of Thorns and Roses (ACOTAR) | Sarah J Maas | Book Review
“Magic – everything was magic, and it broke my heart.”
So where should I start? Since the very beginning of my bookstagram journey, ACOTAR has been gracing my feed. And all the hype! I became super interested (can anyone blame me!) and I HAD to read the book. And now I am so glad I did!
ACOTAR Review
First & foremost, Sarah J Maas did NOT
disappoint me. It has everything that you can ask for in a high-fantasy romance
novel. A good plot? Check. A strong female protagonist AND strong female
characters? Check. Imagination? Check. Magic? Check. Adventure? Check.
Sacrifice? Check. Love? Check. Steamy romance? Check. It has everything!
And the details! One of the major elements that
made me enjoy the book so much was the details that Sarah J Maas has so
carefully woven around the characters, their appearance, and the story. The
writing has a good flow to it, complemented by a fast-paced story and super
easy language. The first person narrative from the protagonist’s perspective
makes it simple to follow, and to feel, the storyline. The writing never fails
to capture the reader’s imagination and instills a better sense of
understanding of Feyre’s character development and her interpersonal conflicts
as her emotion and feelings flows through the words.
But nothing really is perfect. And ACOTAR is not as well. Considering that it is after all a high-fantasy, certain things are bound to be over the top. There are many clichés, many repetitive tropes, some are cringe and some are unavoidable yet well formulated. Well, it’s a romance, fantasy or not, so clichés are pretty much expected.
Also, the narrative becomes a little bit
discouraging when Sarah J Maas tries to be too poetic through her words and
completely loses the meaning of the phrase or its relevance. She succeeds most
of the time in conveying what she wants to, often making the phrases seem truly
beautiful, but very few times she fails in her attempt.
Feyre is a well written character, and even
though there’s a significant amount of her character development, it lacks in
other characters. But ACOTAR is just the first book of the series and there’s a
lot of promise for more satisfying character developments and thrilling story
arcs.
Who should read ACOTAR?
ACOTAR is the perfect book for any reader who
wants to begin their journey in the realm of high-fantasy adult fiction. But, not
recommended for young readers.
Happy reading!
